Paul Smith :: Typewriter Artist |
This is beyond words and wonderment.
Paul Smith, the man with extraordinary talent was born in Philadelphia on September 21, 1921 with severe cerebral palsy.
Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech & mobility but also taught himself to become a master artist as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid of a formal education as a child.
‘When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one. Since he couldn’t press two keys at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the top of the number keys. In other words, his pictures were based on these characters …. @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ .
Across seven decades, Paul created hundreds of pictures. He often gave the originals away. Sometimes, but not always, he kept or received a copy for his own records. As his mastery of the typewriter grew, he developed techniques to create shadings, colors, and textures that made his work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings.’
This great man passed away on June 25, 2007, but left behind a collection of his amazing artwork that will be an inspiration for many.

FCC blames car alarm plague on radio tower |
TAMPA, Fla. (UPI) – Federal authorities say a radio tower may be causing a mysterious plague of car alarms going off or not working at all in downtown Tampa, Fla.
The Federal Communication Commission said a radio antennae atop the Colonial Bank building that broadcasts oldies station WRBQ-FM 104.7 uses a radio frequency that emits a harmonic that could sync up with the frequency used by some car alarms, The Tampa Tribune reported Tuesday.
The FCC said the harmonic, which is not in violation of FCC regulations, might be the reason some people have reported their car alarms mysteriously going off or failing to work at all in the area of downtown surrounding the building.
“WRBQ is not in violation,” the FCC case report said, “and the car alarms in question are required to be designed to accept/reject (the interfering frequency).”
However, some motorists have reported their engines failing in the area and then working perfectly once pushed or towed out of the small section of downtown — a phenomenon that was not covered by the FCC’s report.
Others theorize the possible culprit could be police squad car mobile transmitters or even wireless phone communications, the newspaper said.

Grandma fights $10,500 cell phone bill |
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UPI) – A North Carolina retiree says she’s been battling her phone company since 2006 over a $10,500 bill for calls to an adult chat line she claims she never used.
Opal Savage of Charlotte said the majority of her $10,539.72 Verizon Wireless bill came from six weeks worth of calls to chat line Secret Encounters and she is refusing to pay the bill because she claims she is not responsible for them, The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday.
Savage said she believes her number was stolen by someone who used it to make the calls. She said she faults Verizon for failing to notify her when her bill, which is usually about $250, soared into the thousands and topped $10,000.
The grandmother said her two grandsons, ages 13 and 17, could not have made the calls without her knowledge. Both have signed sworn affidavits denying they made the calls during the six-week period in 2006.
Savage said she is taking her case into the legal arena and filed a police report related to the bill last week.

Verizon Tech Accused Of Making $220K In Sex Calls |
Former Employee Said To Have Tapped Into Landlines Of 950 Customers To Make 45,000 Minutes Worth Of Calls
By Lee Kushnir & Jeff Capellini, WCBSTV.com
NEW YORK (CBS) ― A former Verizon technician racked up $220,000 in phone-sex calls by tapping into the land lines of nearly 950 customers, authorities charged on Tuesday.
Joseph Vaccarelli, 45, of Nutley, made approximately 5,000 calls, resulting in 45,000 minutes of call time, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a news release.
Vaccarelli placed the calls in about 30 municipalities in Bergen County, according to the release.
Verizon estimated that out of a 40-week period, Vaccarelli spent 15 weeks talking on 900 chat lines, authorities alleged.
Vaccarelli was charged with theft by deception and theft of services. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Central Municipal Court.
