Hackers exploit Adobe Flash, Reader flaw

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Jul.30, 2009, under On the News..., Technology, WTF!!!

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) – Hackers exploiting a newfound flaw in Adobe Flash video player and Acrobat Reader can steal data and take money from bank accounts, online security experts say.

Adobe Systems Inc., the San Jose, Calif., maker of the video player and tool for opening PDF documents, is scrambling to develop an emergency patch by Friday, the company says.

Even if it solves the problem and sends out a security patch, the problem may persist because some users may defer installing the updates, Web and computer security experts fear.

As a result, “we may see a broad-scale explosion of attacks,” Purewire Inc. senior researcher Paul Royal tells USA Today.

The security firm says it already found a booby-trapped e-mail sent to a corporate executive.

Another security firm, Finjan Inc., says it found several dozen legitimate Web pages carrying poisoned Flash clips, USA Today says.

The security firms discovered the vulnerability early this month after cybercriminals began e-mailing PDF files with corrupted Flash video clips and hacking into Web sites to implant them, USA Today reports.

The clips, when activated, enable attackers to quickly install malicious programs on the user computers. The programs turn the computers into Internet bots, or Web robots, that steal data, siphon cash from financial accounts, spread spam and trigger promotions to sell fake antivirus programs, the newspaper says.

Some 43 percent of the 1,500 cyberattacks identified by security firm F-Secure PLC the first six months of this year were directed at Acrobat Reader, up from nearly 29 percent last year.

That puts Acrobat Reader ahead of Microsoft Word, targeted in 40 percent of this year’s attacks, the Helsinki, Finland, company says.

Does pennies for pizza campaign break law?

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Apr.12, 2009, under On the News..., Weird News

COPPELL, Texas (UPI) – A pizza chain may be violating U.S. laws with a promotion involving advertising stickers on pennies.

CiCi’s Pizza, which has its headquarters in Coppell, Texas, and operates 650 restaurants, mostly in the eastern United States, started its Penny Picker Up campaign Monday, the Jacksonville, Fla., Times-Union reported. The company distributed a total of 1 million pennies to stores with stickers redeemable for food.

A spokesman for the U.S. Mint declined to comment on whether the stickers violate laws against defacing U.S. currency or using it for advertising, saying any decision to prosecute would be up to the Justice Department.

Tom Koenigsberg, CiCi’s head of marketing, said he believes the campaign is legal because the stickers are redeemable. Any pennies returned to the stores are to be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters, Advertising Age said.

Transforming car-plane to sell for $194K

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Apr.12, 2009, under On the News..., Weird News

PAXON, Ill. (UPI) — An Illinois man who helped create a car that transforms into an airplane said the vehicle will be available for public purchase within about two years.

Sam Schweighart, 31, of Paxon, Ill., said the Terrafugia Transition, which took its first flight March 5, is expected to retail for about $194,000, the Champaign (Ill.) News-Gazette reported.

He said about 50 people have already put down $10,000 deposits on the transformable vehicles.

Schweighart, who holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, created the car along with colleagues from the same university. He said the Transition runs on high-octane gas or aviation fuel and gets 30 to 35 miles per gallon on the ground. In the air, the Transition uses about 5 gallons an hour and can remain airborne for 460 miles at a time.

“If you need to drive and fly a short distance, it solves several problems, including finding or paying for a hangar,” said Thomas Haines, editor in chief of the news site for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. “It’s really meant for a special kind of consumer.”
