Today I am going to give you my take on the all new PS3 slim. I have been getting some questions through Twitter and e-mail and I want to make sure that I address those in this review. One of those questions was about the noise. The PS3 slim is very quiet. The original PS3 was not very loud either, but the new slim version is noticeably quieter. Even when the disk drive is spinning you can hardly hear any noise. The next question I have been getting asked is how much heat the console gives off. If anyone remembers, the PS2 slim had a lot of heat issues. The PS3 slim does not have any of those heat issues. I let it run for 9 hours straight and I did not have any heat problems at all. There seems to be some extra venting in the back of the console. If that was one of your concerns or one of the things holding you back from getting a new PS3 slim, don’t worry about it. If you like the PS3 and its operating system, you will like the new PS3 slim because it does almost everything the same as the original, but it’s smaller.

One of the things you might not like about the new PS3 is the design. People are saying that it looks cheap and they don’t like the matte finish on the machine. Some people don’t like that Sony took away the touch buttons on the console either. Personally, I like the new design. I was very impressed that Sony was able to put everything that the PS3 has to offer into such a small package. You will not get backwards compatibility with the new PS3 slim. You used to be able to install Linux, and other operating systems on the PS3, but now that is gone as well. Sony took the power switch off the back of the console too, but that is OK because this console uses 33% less power than the original PS3. The operating system looks just the same, the games perform just the same, the blu-ray disks load just as fast, and this is really the same console in a smaller package. This isn’t really an Xbox vs. PS3 debate, but I will say that the new PS3 considering its $100 price drop makes it some very good competition with the Xbox 360.
