Why Did You Make the Switch to Linux?
by FuKdAtShHh on Aug.28, 2008, under Technology
Read almost any blog or forum dedicated to the free, open-source
operating system Linux and its diaspora of distributions, and you might
assume that the users are almost exclusively haters of Microsoft or,
occasionally, Apple. A system crash or price concerns might have led to
a few “switches,” but the truth must go much broader and deeper. So we
ask our open-source switchers (and dual-booters): What made you pick up
that first installation CD and give Linux a go? Was it an experiment
with some older hardware? A killer app or idea you saw in action? The
principals of open source? Or were you truly escaping from a
restrictive system, like Mark Pilgrim? Post your story in the comments below, and we’ll review them for a future post.

Fat Joe Calls Daddy Yankee A ‘Sellout’ For Endorsing John McCain
by FuKdAtShHh on Aug.28, 2008, under Hip Hop News, Politics
“I opened the newspaper and got sick to my stomach,” Joe continued. “I felt like I wanted to vomit when I seen that. The reason why I called him a sellout is because I feel he did that for a [publicity] look, rather than the issues that are affecting his people that look up to him. How could you want John McCain in office when George Bush and the Republicans already have half a million people losing their homes in foreclosure? We’re fighting an unjust war. It’s the Latinos and black kids up in the frontlines, fighting that war. … We over here trying to take the troops out of Iraq and bring peace. This guy immediately wants war. If not with Iraq or Afghanistan, he’ll start a new one with Iran. I feel real disgusted that Daddy Yankee would do that. Either he did that for a look, or he’s just not educated on politics.”
Joe said he’s more than willing to educate Yankee on each of the politicians’ platforms.
“If he believes John McCain is the better candidate for the Latinos,” Joe said, “we could sit down. Even if he wants to get into a debate, we can debate anywhere — New York, Puerto Rico.”

Urgent Plea from COTEF
by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Aug.28, 2008, under Misc
One last plea for your help with the American Express Members Project. There are only four days of nominating left and we’re falling behind- although we’re still in the top 70 of almost 1200 projects. We currently have just over 500 votes but the top projects are almost reaching 4,000. The phase that ends on September 1st is to choose the top 25 projects that will then go into a card member voting phase in which the top five will receive grants ranging from $100,000 to $1.5 million. If we can’t increase our nominations in the next four days we will be out of the running for this funding.
I’m sure you recognize what a significant impact this funding could have on our ability to reach children with the crucial Earth philosophies and skills so needed to make a difference in the world.
We thank all who have already taken the time to nominate our project, and a special thanks to those who also wrote comments! We’ve gotten feedback from a number of folks who have had technical
difficulties and weren’t able to vote. If this has happened to you, please make sure you’re signing in as a Guest- not a Card member, unless of course you are a card member. If that’s not the problem, our techie folk have told us it could be something in your computer set-up like pop up blockers or some other filtering
system. If you have another computer, perhaps at work or if you’re near a library, you might try again on their system.
Sorry, I wish I had more to suggest, but many have successfully used the system as guests, so we know it is possible. Your efforts are appreciated.
So please, before you leave for the holiday weekend, go to www.membersproject.com and nominate the project entitled: Creating Children of the Earth. The link directly to our project is: http://www.membersproject.com/project/view/ZDMHOB
If even half of the Tracker community (let alone all our friends and family) will take the time to do this, we could be eligible for some much needed financial support.
Thank you all for your time and efforts!
Google talks Android Market app store
by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Aug.28, 2008, under Technology
Android’s gaining a head of steam as it heads towards release — Google just posted up some details on the upstart OS’s app distribution system, Android Market. Just like Apple’s iPhone App Store, Android Market will run on Android phones like the HTC Dream and allow users to browse and install apps, as well as comment on and rate apps they’ve already purchased. (Somewhat terrifyingly, Google describes the rating and comment-system as “similar to YouTube,” but we’re hoping the reference is to user-generated ratings in general and not the grammar and language catastrophe that is YouTube comments.) Unlike Apple’s store, however, Android Market will be open to all — Google wants devs to “have an open and unobstructed environment” for their apps, and it’ll only take three steps (register, upload, describe) to put content on the service. The first Android handsets will come with a beta version of Market that supports free downloads only, but a version that has app sales, versioning, and other features will arrive soon after launch — given the number of mediocre apps that have somehow passed Apple’s vetting process, it’ll be interesting to see what shows up in Google’s store with no filters at all. More screenshots after the break.

Report Of Steve Jobs’ Death Greatly Exaggerated
by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Aug.28, 2008, under On the News..., WTF!!!
Taking a page from Mark Twain, an obituary of Apple of Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs was accidentally published on Bloomberg’s wire service on Wednesday.
The premature obituary was in the process of being updated and was marked as “hold, not for release,” according to media gossip site Gawker.com, which printed the report before it was immediately taken off the wire service. It is common practice for news organizations to update obituaries of leading public figures before their death to keep information as up to date as possible.
Red-faced Bloomberg editors deleted the story and wrote, “An incomplete story referencing Apple Inc. was inadvertently published by Bloomberg News at 4:27 p.m. New York time today. The item was never meant for publication and has been retracted,” according to Gawker.
The lengthy obit delves into Jobs’ considerable accomplishments, and includes how Apple stocks would react upon news of his demise. It ends with a list of Jobs’ survivors, including his wife, children and sisters.
Since the premature obit was quickly deleted, it did not impact Apple stock. There has been much speculation about Jobs’ health since he appeared to have lost a great deal of weight and looked gaunt at the The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
Many wondered if Jobs’ was suffering from a reoccurrence of pancreatic cancer that he had in 2003. Subsequently, rumors were fueled by media reports which further speculated about the health of the Apple leader, including debates about whether Jobs’ health was a private matter, if he was in fact ill — which Apple denied — and how such a serious health matter impact the company’s finances.
Things came to a head following a New York Times article published in late July by tech columnist Joe Nocera who wrote, “To be blunt about it, is that Apple simply can’t be trusted to tell truth about its chief executive. Under Mr. Jobs, Apple has created a culture of secrecy that has served it well in many ways.” In the article, Nocera cited an earlier article in the Times concerning Jobs’ health.
“John Markoff reported in The New York Times that Mr. Jobs had had [sic] a surgical procedure earlier this year, the details of which remain unclear. I hear that he has had ongoing digestive difficulties, which have contributed to his weight loss–possibly a side effect of the surgery. And in the weeks leading up to the conference, he came down with an infection, which had a lot to do with why he looked so gaunt. It wasn’t cancer, thank goodness. But was more than a “common bug.” By claiming Mr. Jobs had a bug, Apple wasn’t just going dark on its shareholders. It was deceiving them.”
Nocera said that just hours after he spoke to Apple concerning the alleged health issues, Jobs, never one to mince words, phoned him, angrily reacting to the article, and called Nocera on the carpet.
According to Nocera, the conversation went like this, “This is Steve Jobs,” he began. “You think I’m an arrogant [expletive] who thinks he’s above the law, and I think you’re a slime bucket who gets most of his facts wrong.” After that rather arresting opening, he went on to say that he would give me some details about his recent health problems, but only if I would agree to keep them off the record. I tried to argue him out of it, but he said he wouldn’t talk if I insisted on an on-the-record conversation. So I agreed.”
“Because the conversation was off the record, I cannot disclose what Mr. Jobs told me. Suffice it to say that I didn’t hear anything that contradicted the reporting that John Markoff and I did this week. While his health problems amounted to a good deal more than “a common bug,” they weren’t life-threatening and he doesn’t have a recurrence of cancer.”
So, whether it’s a premature obit or persistent media speculation, Jobs once again finds himself in the unwanted spotlight of the public.
