Many people have different rituals in celebrating the arrival of a new child.

Muslims in western India have been observing a bizarre ritual – they’ve been throwing their young children off a tall building to improve their health.

The faithful have been observing the ritual at a shrine in Solapur, in western India’s Maharastra, for more than five hundred years. They believe it will make their children strong and say no accidents have ever happened.

Thousands queue at the Muslim shrine in Solapur to take part in a bizarre ancient ritual.

They have been throwing their infant children off this 15 meter high (nearly 50 foot) tower for 500 years.

The youngsters are caught in a white sheet and organizers claim there’ve never been any accidents or injuries.

In fact the ritual is believed to make children grow up healthy and strong.

And Solapur isn’t the only place where the ceremony takes place.

Muslims and Hindus hold baby dropping rituals in various parts of the country. Some Indians have questioned why the authorities don’t intervene.

But while there are those against the practice there are clearly many in favor of it
