Stinky paycheck empties bank

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Apr.30, 2008, under WTF!!!, Weird News

DANBURY, Conn. (UPI) – A truly stinky paycheck forced the evacuation of a bank in New Milford, Conn., and a lockdown of a nearby children’s center, police say.

Police said after authorities were contacted by the Bank of America regarding a noxious smell Thursday, the New Milford bank was emptied to allow hazardous materials experts to search the premises, the Waterbury (Conn.) Republican-American reported.

Children at the Beehive Children’s Center behind the bank were kept inside as a precaution during the search.

Police said the unusual smell was eventually traced to a paycheck handled by a man with machine cutting oil on his hands.

The check had been deposited at the bank and the smell never dissipated, the Republican-American reported.

The emergency precautions were called off after the smelly check was found and the bank was allowed to reopen about an hour after it was closed.

Man sued for hurling carrot at wife’s eye

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Apr.30, 2008, under Weird News

MONROE, Conn. (UPI) — A Connecticut woman who lost an eye when her husband chucked a carrot at her reportedly is suing him for causing the injury.

Pamela Vecsey of Monroe, Conn., filed suit against her husband, claiming he threw a carrot 20 feet in her direction while they were having a dispute July 14, 2006, the Connecticut Post reported.

Vecsey’s attorney said her client’s eye burst when it was hit with the carrot. Vecsey reportedly replaced the ruptured eyeball with a glass eye.

Police arrested Roderick Vecsey, 48, and he was charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct, the newspaper said. However, the charges against him have been dismissed and the Vecseys are now residing in the same home, despite the lawsuit, the Post reported.

State Seeks No Bail For Teacher Jailed On New Sex Charges

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Apr.29, 2008, under On the News..., WTF!!!, Weird News

Ragusa in cuff again... [News Channel 8 photo by JOHN WINTERROWD]Hillsborough County deputies lead suspended teacher Stephanie Ragusa to a vehicle Monday. Authorities say she had sex Monday with a former student while out on bail on charges that she had sex with two middle school students.

TAMPA - Prosecutors are trying to keep teacher Stephanie Ragusa behind bars until she stands trial on charges including unlawful sexual activity with minors.

Ragusa, 29, appeared in court this morning for a hearing on whether she should be released on bail. The hearing was delayed until Friday so her attorney has time to prepare.

She was arrested Monday for the third time in six weeks in connection with allegations she had sex with two high school boys. This time, a sheriff’s detective spotted her coming out of a student’s house and learned they had just had sex again, according to an arrest report.

Ragusa was arrested a second time April 15 and a third time about 1 p.m. Monday after sheriff’s Detective Travis Valles saw her walking out of the student’s house.

After Ragusa noticed the investigator’s vehicle parked outside, she ran to the student’s front door. Valles ordered her not to go inside.

The teen later told the investigator that Ragusa had come to his home about noon and started talking about the criminal case and that he and Ragusa later went to his bedroom.

$1m on offer for first to grow chicken meat in a lab

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Apr.29, 2008, under Technology, WTF!!!

A million dollars is being offered to the first person to develop and sell chicken without the chicken itself having to die – in other words, meat that has been grown in a laboratory.

So-called ‘in-vitro meat’ would be grown from stem cells of chickens and thus produce real flesh without the need to farm live birds.

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) says it will give the prize money to anyone who grows the meat and sells it commercially in at least 10 US states by 30 June 2012. The meat will have to pass a taste test after being cooked to a fried chicken recipe and given to a panel of 10 judges.

The move has created controversy in some vegetarian circles for seeming to sanction the idea of eating meat. But Peta insists that its strategy would have huge animal welfare benefits. ‘As many people refuse to kick their meat addictions, Peta is willing to help them gain access to flesh that doesn’t cause suffering and death,’ a spokesman said.

Though it sounds like science fiction, the concepts behind growing meat in a laboratory are sound. Artificial animal organs, such as hearts, have already been grown. Stem cells from chickens – or sheep or cows – would have to be seeded in a nutrient-rich mixture and then grown on a solid framework. That framework would have to stretch and bend in order to flex the meat and cause it to develop into muscle. That muscle can then eventually be harvested as meat.

Some very small quantities of such meat have already been grown. The first edible in-vitro flesh was developed from a goldfish in 2000. Numerous companies and scientific research groups are already exploring the field.

However, the largest obstacle remains the expense of developing artificial meat. One estimate was that current technology could produce 250g of beef but at a cost of $1m.

However, Peta is hoping that the offer of a prize will spur research that could bring down costs dramatically. A similar process happened in space research, when the publicity surrounding the offer of cash to developers of private space vehicles led to a boom in the industry.

300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn’t feed him well

by FrEiBeRgS2002 on Apr.28, 2008, under WTF!!!, Weird News

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.
Continue to 2nd paragraph

Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn’t happy that he’s down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn’t provide inmates with enough food.

According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

“On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out,” Laswell wrote in his complaint. “About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again.”

But Laswell then goes on to complain that he undertakes little vigorous activity.

“If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight,” the suit says. “The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death.”

The suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals. The jail has served only cold food for years.

The meals, provided through Aramark Correctional Institution Services, average 3,000 calories a day, jail Capt. Hunter Petray told The Morning News of northwest Arkansas for a story Saturday.

A typical Western diet consists of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.

Laswell’s suit was filed without a lawyer in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville.
