Mom accused of stabbing son at doctor’s office

PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) – A woman is charged with attempted murder after police said she stabbed her teenage son multiple times at a doctor’s office.

Celeste Minardi, 55, went to the Largo doctor’s office to meet her son for a court-ordered supervised visit Saturday.

They’ve been meeting there for the past three years.

But this time, according to police, Minardi brought two knives to the visit, an 18-inch double edge ornamental dagger and a knife commonly used for drywall.

“She had a large floppy purse that she had both weapons hidden in,” said Largo Police Sgt. Mark Young. “And according to interviews when she does have visitation she will bring toys, trinkets, cologne to her son and so it’s normal for her to walk in with a floppy purse.”

That’s why police said no one saw it coming when Minardi pulled out the two knives and stabbed her son in the throat, the abdomen, above his eye and in his head.

The 15-year-old was reportedly dozing off right before he was stabbed.

Those who were working nearby could hardly believe what happened.

“That’s just crazy,” said witness Roxanne Brown. “Why would you want to harm your son. I don’t understand.”

After being stabbed police said the teenager ran out into the lobby then collapsed.

Doctors took the weapons away from Minardi and held her until police arrived.

The boy was taken to BayFront Medical Center.

NASA unveils lunar concept vehicle

HOUSTON (UPI) — The U.S. space agency unveiled its latest lunar concept vehicle that has six-wheel drive, but no doors, windows or seats — and only comes in the color gold.

Built at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, the vehicle provides an idea of what the transportation possibilities might be when astronauts start exploring the moon by 2020. Other than a few basic requirements, the primary instruction given to the designers was to throw away assumptions made on NASA’s previous rovers and come up with new ideas.

The vehicle includes six wheels that can pivot individually in any direction, researchers said. That feature, called crab steering, is designed to allow astronauts to drive into a lunar crater sideways if the crater’s slope is too great.

The vehicle is designed to have the driver stand at the steering mechanism, since sitting in a spacesuit is not comfortable or practical, NASA said. The astronaut’s perch — steering mechanism, driver and all — can pivot 360 degrees.

Massive snow fort holds 20

NEENAH, Wis. (UPI) – A teenager in Neenah, Wis., put his snow fort-building skills to use, constructing an igloo in his parents’ front yard that can hold 20 people.

Dan Meyer, 18, said he used his 10 years of snow construction experience to form snow brought to the yard by city dump trucks into a massive snow fort that reaches above the first story of his parents’ home, the Appleton (Wis.) Post-Crescent reported.

Meyer said it took seven truckloads of snow to sculpt the 8-foot high, 14-foot wide and 34-foot long structure.

“I was just amazed by how much one load was,” Meyer said. “Then I piled it up and called them for more loads.”

Jeff Harding, assistant superintendent of public works for Neenah, said the city occasionally gets requests for truckloads of snow, but this was the first instance he knew about where the snow went toward a construction project.

“We backed up in the front yard and dumped away, just like we would at our dump site,” he said. “It’s really like, ‘My God, what are you doing with all this snow?’”

Wallet found after 33 years

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (UPI) – A former student of California’s Santa Clara University said construction workers at the college found his wallet — which he lost 33 years ago.

Tom Eichenberg, who said he can’t even remember losing the wallet in 1975, said he was contacted by the school’s alumni office and was told his wallet was found behind a wall that had been demolished, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported Monday.

Eichenberg said the treasures found inside the accidental time capsule included: “My student ID card, draft card, Social Security card, a Southern Pacific Peninsula train schedule, a BankAmericard, a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) ticket with 10 cents remaining, a 5-cent postage stamp, a Wells Fargo pocket calendar, a receipt for my yearbook photo and a metric conversion table.”

He said the billfold also contained numerous pictures of family members, including baby photos of his nephews, who have since grown up.

“However, the biggest change from today was my driver’s license — weight: 130 lbs,” Eichenberg said.

The wallet brought back memories, but Eichenberg said it did not bring him any spare cash.

“I was a typical college student, always broke,” he said.
