Dear Yahoo!:
Can I return a vehicle after I purchased it?
Juanita
Reserve, Louisiana
Dear Juanita:
Some sites claim a car buyer’s “cooling off period” varies from state to state, but to the best of our knowledge, there is no such law.
Utah’s Division of Consumer Protection explains that some car dealerships may offer individual deals that allow buyers to return recently purchased cars and apply their value toward another car. However, this isn’t a law and is solely at the discretion of the dealer.
Same deal with California. The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles explains there is “no ‘cooling off’ period on vehicles purchased from a dealer unless you obtain a contract cancellation option.” In other words, unless you have something in writing, the car is yours.
And according to Car Buying Tips, “Contrary to popular belief, most states don’t have a three day ‘Buyers Remorse’ law for car buying.”
The moral? Avoid impulse purchases, read the fine print, and do your homework before you sign on the dotted line.
