Engagement off to violent start

by Fukdatshhh Viewers on Jan.10, 2007, under Weird News

YORK, Pa. (UPI) — Hours after a Maryland man proposed to his girlfriend and got a “yes,” he was charged with punching her and hitting her on the head with a steering wheel lock.

Pennsylvania state police said Stephen Mujerm, 40, popped the question at a New Year’s party near York, Pa., to girlfriend Victorine Taboh, and all was well until the pair and another passenger set out for their homes in Maryland with Mujerm at the wheel. Police said both Taboh and the other passenger complained Mujerm was driving recklessly. He stopped the car and reportedly began arguing with his new fiancee at the roadside.

Taboh reportedly grabbed the steering wheel lock and smashed the windows of Mujerm’s car. The passenger told authorities Mujerm punched Taboh before swinging the wheel lock at her head, which knocked her unconscious.

She was taken to York Hospital, treated and released with no serious injuries, the York Dispatch reported.

Mujerm was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangering and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

There was no indication of whether the engagement was still intact.

Bank robber arrested 20 years after heist

by Fukdatshhh Viewers on Jan.10, 2007, under Weird News

PARIS (UPI) – Police in France arrested a bank robber who had spent 20 years on the run since the original heist.

The BBC said Miloud Hai, 48, was already sentenced to life in prison for his part in one of France’s biggest bank robberies. Hai was part of an armed group that stole $17.6 million in a 1986 bank heist in the western France town of Saint-Nazaire.

But the robbery that led to his arrest in a Parisian suburb in April was much less lucrative, police said. During that crime, four men forced a real estate agent to open his safe and stole $19,800.

The BBC said police arrested Hai as he left an apartment where he’d been living under a false name. Hai had managed to elude authorities by moving and changing his identity frequently, the BBC said.

Man uses torch to thaw pipes, starts fire

by Fukdatshhh Viewers on Jan.10, 2007, under Weird News

BEL ALTON, Md. (UPI) – A Bel Alton, Md., man scorched part of his home while trying to use a propane torch to thaw frozen pipes.

Charles Woodland tried to thaw a kerosene pipe with a propane torch after the heater in the house where he lives with his 81-year-old mother failed to work properly, the Washington Post reported.

While he was trying to free up the pipes, a fire started. While neither Woodland nor his mother was injured by the ensuing blaze, damage to the house and contents was assessed by investigators at $150,000.

The practice causes fires in homes all around the nation every winter and last month led to the death of a man in Wyoming man. Fairfax County (Va.) Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Dan Schmidt told the Post the department is called to put out a fire caused by the practice an average of once a year.

“The sensible thing is to call in a plumber,” Schmidt said.
